  The attendant at Alamo said it was because their rates are cheaper than others. Well, apparently not once you add a second driver! The attendant also said that if we had booked with Costco, a second driver would have been included. I will be talking to Airmiles about doing this as well.

  When we booked our car rental through Airmiles with Alamo, no where did it state that a second driver would cost an additional $15/day. We were on a two week trip, which would have added over $200 to our rental fee. We refused to pay. We have booked with other rental agencies in the past and always had a second driver included.

  Including a second driver at no additional cost, makes good safety sense as well. If the primary driver gets fatigued, there is a second driver to take over and ensure a safe journey.

  I've rented with Alamo despite being a Gold member with their competitor - the prices are just better. This most recent rental was complicated by horrible winter weather, but the service agent was kind and I got excellent service.

  Therefore, my husband had to drive the entire time. Could I go for groceries while he was busy with something else? NO! Could I wander the shops for an afternoon on my own? NO! Believe me, neither one of us was thrilled with that prospect.... :-)

  So - Alamo - you should post on the rental website that fees may apply for an additional driver. Be upfront about it! Don't hide that fact to make your rates look lower than others!
